The lack of a good dental plan is one of the main reasons why a
lot of people fail to visit their dentists. They want to, but cannot get
proper care and treatment for their teeth. This is according to a
survey that was conducted back in 2008 by the National Association of
Dental Plans. As a matter of fact, the Academy of General Dentistry has
found that kids annually miss up to 51 million hours of school because
of dental problems. Having a great dental plan, thus, becomes essential
to health and growth. Here are the types of dental plans that are the
best for both kids and adults
Dental Plans for Kids
CHIP
(Children's Health Insurance Plan) helps give children affordable
dental coverage. The extent of the coverage and its type differs from
state to state. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says that
there is a probability that you might have to pay for out of pocket
expenses as part of CHIP's coverage. The good news, however, is that the
costs will be limited. Additionally, other procedures such as check-ups
(x-rays, oral exams, cleanings) may not require you to pay for any
additional charges
The eligibility for CHIP will depend on which
state you live in. According to the Academy of General Dentistry,
children who are below the age of 19, are categorized under a certain
income level and do not have any sort of dental coverage are eligible to
receive CHIP
For the Adults
Adults can have the
highest level of flexibility possible with freedom-of-choice dental
plans. This plan can pretty much cover any dentist in your state and
will not depend on the kind of treatment that you receive. However,
several dental plans are managed-care plans that need the patient to
select from a list of dentists within a group of providers that have all
agreed to give discounts on their fees. These are also known as
preferred providers organizations and they have plans that will allow
both dentists and patients to choose the kind of treatment needed. They
will also be responsible for covering a percentage of the treatment's
cost
PPOs (preferred providers organizations) can provide you
with more coverage than dental HMO's (health management organizations).
Health management organizations usually cap off dentist payments at a
fixed rate, and this is regardless of the complexity involving the kind
of care required
Before Choosing a Plan
Make sure
that you visit your dentist before you choose a dental plan. Have
him/her do some examinations on you that will include diagnostic x-ray
sets. Have the dentist give an assessment of your overall dental health
and see if any complex dental procedures need to be performed on you.
This assessment will help point you towards the right direction as to
the level of dental insurance that will best suit you and your budget
Even
though this will not make choosing an appropriate any easier it can,
however, give you simpler options and needs to make sure that you get
the highest possible match for your dental care needs
